We are excited to promote an event at Fair Trade Decor in Coronado on

musicians.

Mark your calendars everyone! We are very happy to welcome Saul and Alma from
Oaxaca, Mexico, back at Fair Trade Decor this summer! Joined with Latin
style musician trio, Son Pa Ti! A three day event weekend demonstrating
how they carve and paint alebrijes with live music!Alebrijes are an
internationally respected Mexican tradition that first originated with
Pedro Linares in the 1930s. Linares fell ill and while unconscious he
dreamt of a strange forest. There, he saw animals turning into
fantasies. Donkey’s with butterfly wings, a rooster with bull horns and
many more creatures, with all of them shouting one word, “Alebrijes”.
Upon recovering, he began recreating these figures in cardboard and
paper mache. Today alebrijes are hand-carved from copal-wood found in
the state of Oaxaca, and have recently been spotlighted though the the
Disney Pixar movie, Coco. Saul first learned about the art of cutting
and painting wood at the age of 11, thanks to the help of his older
brother. His wife Alma learned how to paint the alebrijes shortly after
meeting Saul. Together, inspired by the nature and shapes of wood around
them, they created a family business making these fun alebrijes with
over 23 years of experience! Along their journey, Saul & Alma
partnered with the San Jose State University to help reforestation in
Oaxaca. You can see this delicate process in person at our store, July
6th, 7th and 8th. Local musicians Son Pa Ti will be joining the fun on
July 7th. You can listen to their music through the link provided below.
We hope to see you there!
