A Fair Trade Day in San Diego!


SDSU students came by to sample Fair Trade chocolate during finals week.  At the Villa Alvarado residence hall students enjoyed Ben & Jerry's chocolate ice cream, spicy and regular hot cocoa, chocolate bars from Green & Blacks Organic, Madecasse, Equal Exchange, Divine and Theo.
Many students signed up to be a part of Fair Trade SDSU!  Professor Vinod Sasidharan, Faculty Advisor for Fair Trade SDSU served the hot cocoa while encouraging students to become part of the movement on campus.

Brad Perry of KUSI enjoyed his FREE scoop of Ben and Jerry's Ice cream with every donated gift for Promises2kids with Ephraim Mallari at Seaport Village.  Check out the La Mesa Fair Trade Towns sticker in the top corner of the window! Fair Trade San Diego County made a donation to Promises2Kids to support the cause.

FAIR TRADE SUNDAY!

   In between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, there is a new shopping day designed to bring awareness to the fair trade movement.  The goal is to get shoppers to be mindful of their global footprint during the holiday shopping season.  Fair trade items include everything from coffee to jewelry, from fashion to novelties.  When shopping fair trade, every purchase enriches a life.   

 
There is an opportunity to shop at Partners Fair Trade Boutique located inside The Unity Center on "Fair Trade Sunday".    The Unity Center is located at 8999 Activity Road San Diego.  The boutique will be open from 8-5pm.

Fair Trade Alternative Gift Fair 
First Lutheran Church downtown is having their annual gift faire today 11/30.  Sample fair trade foods while shopping.  This event benefits Lutheran World Relief and other Fair Trade Partners.  10-2pm

Tasty Tuesday: Fair Trade Apple Galette

It's apple picking time!

Last weekend my son and I along with some friends went to Julian, CA to pick apples.  Julian is a quaint town just outside of San Diego; its history dates back to the California Gold Rush of the 1840s.

My son and his friend, both toddlers, enjoyed picking and eating a ton of apples while at the orchard.  And then we had apple pie at Julian Apple Pie Company too.  It seemed they couldn't get too many apples that day!

Upon returning home I knew I needed to make use of these apples before they went bad.  I decided on a fair trade apple galette for practical reasons: it is tasty and easy.

When I returned to Ohio this summer to visit family and friends a friend of mine made a mixed berry galette; it was so good and she explained that it was also so easy.

The fair trade apple galette that I made was simple a baker of any skill level could make it.  And to make it even easier I used puff pastry instead of making my own dough.  I did make my own whipped cream too (recipe included), which is also remarkably easy.




Fair Trade Apple Galette: From All Recipes
Prep Time 15 Minutes
Ready in 1 Hour 5 Minutes
1 sheet puff pastry, rolled to 1/8-inch
thickness
4 baking apples - peeled, cored, and cut
into 1/3-inch thick slices
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon
juice
1/3 cup superfine Fair Trade sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 egg, well beaten

Directions 

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Lay puff pastry onto a round pizza pan or cookie sheet.

Mix apples and lemon juice together in a bowl until evenly coated; add sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Toss to evenly coat apples. Spread apple mixture into the center of the puff pastry and fold edges of pastry toward the center. Brush the folded pastry edges with about 1/2 the egg.

Refrigerate pastry-apple mixture for flavors and pastry to settle, about 10 minutes. Brush pastry with remaining 1/2 egg.

Place pan on the top rack of preheated oven and bake for 20 minutes. Give galette a 1/4 turn and lower heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Continue baking until pastry is lightly browned, 8 to 10 minutes. Cool slightly before serving, about 10 minutes.

A Fair Trade Gift for a Friend

Recently a dear friend of mine lost a loved one quite suddenly.  I knew that she and her family had received many frozen meals from friends in the wake of the death.  Still I wanted to bring something to the family at the memorial service, which would be at their home.  My friend's family owns a winery so wine seemed inappropriate and I never really want to bring cut flowers, which die quickly or a potted plant that they then need to tend to.  

A wonderful fair trade gift for a friend during a time of need.

Unsure what to do I consulted Pinterest since one can find anything on there.  Sure enough I found a great fair trade gift idea!  Frozen homemade cookies with directions for preparation.  This way my friend and her family could pop one or a dozen in the oven whenever they were in need of a cookie.  I know that when I am sad sometimes I just need a cookie and homemade cookies are the best.


The fair trade ingredients I used for my fair trade gift.



Here's the recipe that I used:


Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) organic butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated Fair Trade sugar
  • 3/4 cup packed Fair Trade brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (I need to pick up more Fair Trade vanilla for future baking projects)
  • 2 large organic cage free eggs
  • 2 cups (12-oz. pkg.) Fair Trade semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • COMBINE flour, baking soda and salt in small bowl. Beat butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in morsels and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto plate and place in freezer.
  • For my friend's note I wrote: preheat the oven and place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bak for 9 to 11 minute (possibly longer if they put them in frozen).
I put the cookies on a plate and froze them and then put the frozen cookies in the package with some ribbon.

I did save two for my son!

Fair Trade San Diego and La Mesa Fair Trade joined the celebration of Fair Trade Decor with their 1st year anniversary.  Well accepted into the merchants association & community, Fair Trade Decor will continue their pursuit of spreading the word about how Fair Trade makes a difference for the developing world and how everyone can make a difference with a purchase.

Special guests include authors: Alepho Deng (They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky) and Jeff Salz (The Way of Adventure, Transforming Your Life and Work with Spirit and Vision), Sarah Emerson (Women Empowered Initiative, PCI), Sandra Martinez (Foundation for Women) and local Fair Trade leaders.

Since opening the store last year, Fair Trade Décor has been accepted to the Fair Trade Federation, www.fairtradefederation.org.   The family-run business has brought handmade furnishings and gifts from more than 40 countries to Del Mar, while following globally accepted principles of Fair Trade, including fair living wages, safe working conditions, environmental sustainability and cultural respect. 

Owner, Betsy Paganelli, noted, “As the first 100% Fair Trade store in San Diego County, we have sought to give back to the community as a site for cultural events, including a family friendly drum circle, international dance lessons, live music and now storytelling and booksigning.”

A Fair Trade Shopping Opportunity!

 

 Join us on Wednesday, February 19 @ 6:30pm at The Unity Center located at 8999 Activity Rd, San Diego, CA 92126. 
 
Part of the mission at The Unity Center is giving back to the global community and selling fair trade products is one way they do this. Rev. Wendy Craig-Purcell  has agreed to open the doors to this unique boutique to supporters of Fair Trade this evening at 6:30pm."Partners Fair Trade Boutique" has grown into one of the largest Fair Trade stores in all of San Diego.  

At 7:30pm we will meet with USD students who have returned from touring a Fair Trade coffee farm in Mexico, followed by a short meeting.  Presentation will be in classrooms 200-201, which is located on the upper level (2nd floor), just around the corner from the Partners Boutique.
